When it comes to updating a historical home, preserving its character while adding modern functionality is a delicate balancing act. At Artisol Design, we recently took on the challenge of renovating the kitchen in a beautiful historic home in downtown Madison, WI. Our primary goal was to create a space that felt like it had always been a part of the home, seamlessly blending contemporary convenience with classic design elements. In this blog post, we’ll take you through the thoughtful choices that brought this vision to life.
When approaching the design for this historic kitchen, we focused on maintaining the architectural integrity of the home. Our aim was to create a kitchen that felt authentic and timeless, as if it had been there for generations. To achieve this, we chose materials, colors, and finishes that complement the home’s original character while enhancing its aesthetic.
To evoke a sense of understated elegance, we selected muted green cabinetry as the focal point of the kitchen. This color choice was inspired by the earthy tones commonly found in historic homes, which offer a calming and inviting atmosphere. The green hue adds depth and sophistication to the space while remaining subtle enough to blend with the home’s existing palette.
Why It Works: Muted green is a versatile color that brings warmth and character, creating a look that feels both fresh and enduring. It's a nod to the past while remaining relevant in contemporary design.
To complement the green cabinets, we chose aged bronze hardware. This finish offers a rich, timeworn appearance that adds a layer of authenticity to the kitchen. The bronze handles and knobs not only enhance the cabinetry but also bring a sense of history and craftsmanship to the space.
Why It Works: Aged bronze has a patina that suggests years of use, fitting perfectly in a historical home where each element should tell a story. It pairs beautifully with the muted green cabinets, creating a cohesive look that feels both luxurious and lived-in.
For the backsplash, we opted for a neutral tile that provides a clean and understated backdrop. The simplicity of the backsplash allows the other design elements to shine, adding texture and interest without overpowering the room. Its classic look ensures it will remain timeless, just like the rest of the kitchen.
Why It Works: A neutral backsplash adds subtle elegance and flexibility, enhancing the kitchen's overall aesthetic while allowing for easy updates in the future. It's a choice that aligns with the goal of creating a kitchen that looks like it has always been there.
The combination of muted green cabinets, aged bronze hardware, and a neutral backsplash creates a kitchen that feels like a natural extension of the home’s original design. It’s a space that balances old and new, honoring the home’s heritage while providing modern amenities. The result is a timeless transformation that enhances both the beauty and functionality of the kitchen.
At Artisol Design, we believe that every home has a story to tell. By carefully selecting colors, materials, and finishes that respect the history of this downtown Madison home, we crafted a kitchen that looks and feels like it has always been there.
